“I talk to my child in my native language but he/she only responds in English”

Even if they don’t respond back in the language of your choice they are silently absorbing your words; so don’t give up just yet - keep going!

STAGE 1: SILENT OBSERVATION/ PRE-PRODUCTION

During this initial stage, learners quietly absorb new words and concepts, primarily focusing on listening and understanding the language.

STAGE 2: EARLY VERBALIZATION/ EARLY PRODUCTION

In this phase, learners begin practicing pronunciation and acquire approximately 1,000 new words and their meanings. Though with multiple errors, the learner progress to constructing short phrases and utilizing these newly learned words in speech. As vocabulary increases the

errors tend to decrease.

STAGE 3: LANGUAGE EMERGENCE

As vocabulary broadens, learners acquire a minimum of 3,000 words. They transition to forming longer phrases and sentences, asking questions, and engaging in basic independent

reading and writing activities.

STAGE 4: INTERMEDIATE PROFICIENCY

Students start processing thoughts and creating responses in the new language. By the end of this stage, they typically know well over 6,000 words and their meanings. Speech becomes more fluid, while reading and writing skills continue to improve.

STAGE 5: ADVANCED PROFICIENCY

Individuals at this stage continually enhance their skills and expand their vocabulary in the second language. They aim for further improvement, refining their proficiency and language capabilities. At this stage the learners may still have an accent but are are easily and fluently
